Artist and physicist Matthew Mohr has created “As We Are” an amazing interactive sculpture of a 14 foot human head made of LED screen ribbons that contains a photo booth at the back. When a person gets a picture taken, the resulting photo is then displayed onto the head for an amazing 3-dimensional interpretation of the image, giving them a unique perspective of themselves not otherwise seen.

As We Are is a 14-foot interactive sculpture by artist Matthew Mohr. The head-shaped work slowly rotates through a database of faces, displaying a range of Columbus residents and its visitors on 24 horizontal bands of LED screens. The monitors wrap nearly 360 degrees around the piece, leaving a gap for a photo studio where guests can pose for pictures that will be featured on work’s screens. The sculpture is currently installed in the Greater Columbus Convention Center, a public venue primed for eager visitors who wish to see their faces projected more than two times their height. Its appearance reflects a few other body-centric public sculptures, namely David Cerny’s banded replication of Franz Kafka’s head in Prague, and Chicago’s Crown Fountain by Jaume Plensa which also displays a rotating cast of faces across a series of LED screens.

If you’re not taking photos of your own mug at least a couple of times every day you’re probably in the minority, but what if you’re a seasoned selfie snapper who really wants to take things to the next level? In that case you’re probably going to want to visit the Greater Columbus Convention Center, where a new interactive sculpture is turning the faces of everyday people into huge works of art.

A new exhibition in Columbus, Ohio lets people display their face on a large 3D sculpture. The exhibition, called 'As We Are,' asks all viewers to 'contemplate portraits of people from different ethnicities and gender identities.' To see their face represented on the 14-foot (4.3 meter) tall sculpture, visitors enter a photo booth at the back of the sculpture's neck and have their photo taken by 29 cameras.

Selfies are okay, but for people who really dig the idea of projecting their faces to the masses, art professor Matthew Mohr's new project 'As We Are', is a more extreme option. The installation is a giant, head-shaped sculpture composed of over 850,000 LEDs, and the people who enter the booth in the back of the head get their pictures taken so they can post their own 3D visages on the massive bust.

For every good selfie you take, there are dozens of duds that you'd rather didn't see the light of day, but the fastest way to get over those insecurities might be to project those selfies onto a giant head for all to see. Accepting your own face and flaws, and how you present yourself to the world, was the impetus for a public art installation called As We Are, by Matthew Mohr Studios.

It took years, and the participation of the Columbus Convention Authority, and well over a million dollars, but As We Are opened to the public on September 12, 2017, a permanent artwork in a new atrium of the city's Convention Center.

First of all, there’s the sheer size of the thing.
It’s a 14-foot-tall, three-dimensional head. And it’s covered in 300 LED panels, populated by 850,000 LED lights.
Then there’s the photo booth in the back. Passersby in the Columbus Convention Center can slip behind a curtain there and have their photo made.
Et voila! Their image appears on the head itself, for all to see.
