About Matthew Mohr

A consistent theme throughout Matthew Mohr’s career has been a contemplative approach to art fueled by the potential of technology to communicate conceptually.

Born in Columbus, Ohio and raised primarily in Hudson, Ohio, Matthew was channeled as a young child into graphic design through a love of drawing and a fascination with mass-production. With an undergraduate degree in Design from Bowling Green State University, Matthew found work in Cleveland as a silk-screen artist and in 1995 transitioned into web design starting his first business as a sub-contractor to AT&T. With over seventy websites built, the company was sold to a NASA contractor at the John Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. For three years, Matthew and a small team developed websites and branding for various programs at the space center.

In 2001 together with his new wife Stephanie, Matthew moved to NYC to pursue an MFA in Design & Technology from Parson’s School of Design. His resulting thesis project, a quasi-3D interactive display system entitled ‘Spatial Narrative’ was soon after commercially applied as the focal point of the Samsung flagship store at the newly constructed Time Warner Building on Columbus Circle in Manhattan. Content for the experience was created through a collaboration between Parsons and Imagination USA.

Post graduation, Matthew returned to web design, specializing in designing and building e-commerce sites for companies such as Newsweek, Bloomingdales, Norma Kamali, and Rao’s.

In 2011, Matthew was selected in a nationwide search to join the faculty of the Columbus College of Art and Design. And after ten years in New York the Mohr’s returned to Ohio to raise their two young daughters.

In continuation for his love of technology in service of communication, Matthew created a thesis project for his Senior graphic design students based on his experience at Parsons; a full semester assignment considering the future of design through the creation of interactive exhibits. A reoccurring year-end show was parlayed into a campus-wide, student-led show celebrating the best of CCAD entitled Chroma.

In the summer of 2015, as part of an art initiative incorporated into the redevelopment of the Columbus Convention Center, Matthew’s proposal for a large-scale, interactive sculpture was selected. The concept entitled ‘As We Are’ was built in collaboration with DCL of Boston and launched in the Fall of 2017. It is the culmination of years of study in art and design focusing on the potential of interactive technologies to convey meaning and will run for seven to ten years.

With the debut of ‘As We Are’, Matthew Mohr Studios was launched with the intent to continue exploration in service of art, humanism, and engagement with technology.
